The year was 1969. The month was June. There was a police raid in Greenwich Village on the Stonewall bar and the gay patrons fought back. The Stonewall riots became known as the birthplace of the “Gay Liberation Movement.”
At that time, among other things, there were no:
- Professional basketball players marching in Gay Pride parades
- Professional athletes in various sports supporting the gay movement
- Gay history classes
- LGBT Community Centers
- LGBT professional organizations
- Celebrities coming out
- Gay Straight Alliances
- Marriage Equality
The LGBT Community has come a long, long way since the Stonewall riots, and joining me this week in the Conscious Conversations Cafe to talk about these changes, the experiences, and where we go from here are three women who live as part of, work on behalf of and/or support LGBT rights and causes:
Betsy Cerulo – the CEO and Founder of AdNet AccountNet, Inc., an integrative business solutions firm offering recruiting and placement of accounting, financial, administrative, healthcare, human resources and information technology professionals and staff in the private and government sectors. AdNet was awarded TOP 100 Minority Business Enterprise in the MidAtlantic region. Betsy was the recipient of the SmartCEO Brava Award in 2012. Her company and employees were honored as a 2013 SmartCEO Future 50 Fastest Growing Companies in the Baltimore area.
Carrie Evans – Executive Director of Equality Maryland, the state’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization.
Tracey Gersh – Chief Program Officer at Chase Brexton Health Services. She has been in the health care field for almost 30 years and is most interested in developing integrated systems of care that improve the well-being for those who typically experience disparate access to care.
Tune in this week as we discuss the social and political advances being made for gender and sexual minorities in the Conscious Conversations Café.
