The WTL 5:
What’s the conversation that changed your life?
Eighteen years ago, my mother and I worked together to plan my wedding. My wedding coordinator, also one of my mom’s dearest friends, told me something that changed the way I handled everything in life from that moment forward. She said, “Choose your battles”. I’ve been able to apply those words of wisdom to every area of my life.
What are you most conscious of today?
I often say that society is suffering from an empathy deficiency and an entitlement epidemic. I am the kind of person who likes to get to the root of an issue and I believe it’s the root of many of the issues that plague our society. From gun violence, sexism, racism, etc., it all involves a choice to not care about how one’s actions will affect the lives of others.
What part of you have you yet to give voice to?
I would have to say my heart for families. I feel that I’ve only touched the surface when it comes to my message to parents and youth. It all begins at home. I believe greatness grows more powerfully in homes that are in order. I am currently working on my voice through my first book due to be released December 2015.
What’s the conversation women need to be having collectively?
We need to have cultural conversations. We need to be able to move past our sensitivities about race and culture, talk about it and, more importantly, LISTEN. That’s when change will happen.
What needs to be said bigger, louder, stronger?
Be humble enough to know that you are not better than anyone else and confident enough to know that you are different from everyone else. We (women) were not created to be perfect, we were created to be powerful.
Thank you, Marcella, for sharing your powerful voice
