In September 2007, WomanTalk Live launched the very first Girls Gone Great Scholarship Essay Contest. Why? Because we believe there are a lot more girls going great than girls going wild. The problem is we usually don't get to hear about all of the wonderful things young women are doing.

We want to recognize young women making a difference in their world right now...young women who have a big vision for the future.

We believe our Girl Gone Great has great ideas, contributes in making this world a better place, has hopes and dreams...and, WomanTalk Live is proud to honor her!

Our 2010 Girl Gone Great will receive:

  • A $1,000 Scholarship generously donated by Talkradio 680 WCBM in Baltimore
  • A guest appearance on WomanTalk Live Radio
  • A write-up, photo and her winning essay in On Purpose Woman Magazine
  • An award that celebrates her greatness
  • Recognition, her photo and essay on the Maryland Women’s Heritage Center website
  • Recognition in other local media venues

The winner of the 2010 Girls Gone Great Scholarship Essay Contest is Aidel Miriam Reach.

Aidel is 17 years old and a senior at Bais Yaakov Eva Winer High School, a Jewish all-girls private school in the Mt. Washington area of Baltimore City. At school, Aidel’s favorite classes are painting, math, video, editing and Bible studies. She speaks Hebrew as a second language.

Aidel lives with her family in Baltimore City near Pikesville and has three brothers, ages 19,12 and 10, and one sister, 15, with whom she shares a bedroom, fun time, and shopping trips.

In her spare time, Aidel enjoys talking on the phone to her friends and playing guitar. This year, she also began taking sewing lessons.

Of course, from reading her essay, you may wonder....what free time?, but Aidel also spends a lot of her free time running programs in Bais Yaakov. This year, she is in charge of planning monthly extracurricular activities at her school, and last year, she headed a room in the school's art exhibit.

Aidel hopes to spend a year in Israel as an overseas student through the Hebrew Theological College, and then return to pursue a college education full-time. She expects to enter the field of Education, either in mainstream schools or in special-education.

Aidel really appreciates that WomanTalk Live offers the Girl Gone Great Scholarship Essay Contest. She enjoys helping others, and is glad that there are those who appreciate that girls her age are trying to make a difference in the world. She believes this type of program engenders good by helping girls across the state recognize the good that they are doing and hear about the good that others are doing.
