Live a Life Worth Celebrating
At her husband's funeral in 2005, Andrea Hylen reminded everyone there to "live a life worth celebrating." Those words evoked such a response from the audience, that they stuck with Andrea and ultimately, Live a Life Worth Celebrating became the name of her own business. After that, Andrea began to explore a deeper place inside of herself. She learned to let go of some of the dreams that died with her husband and she became open to new ideas, dreams and passions - and, on a path she could have never anticipated. She's become an ordained minister, co-author of Conscious Choices: An Evolutionary Woman's Guide to Life, traveled across the United States on a Jonas Brothers' pilgrimage to seventy-eight concerts with her teenage daughter, and sold everything in her home - including the house - and moved from Maryland to California. Tune in to find out how to open up to your inspiration and live a life worth celebrating.

Back on My Feet: Rebuilding Lives
Back on My Feet, founded in Philadelphia in July 2007, is a nonprofit organization that promotes the self-sufficiency of a city's homeless population by engaging them in running as a means to build confidence, strength and self-esteem. It does not provide food or shelter, but it does provide a community that embraces equality, respect, discipline, teamwork and leadership. And, the program is much more than just running - members participate in a comprehensive program that offers connections to job training, employment and housing. Those benefits are earned by maintaining 90% attendance at the morning runs three days a week for the six to nine-month program. Baltimore Program Director, Jackie Truncellito and Baltimore Chapter member, Donnell Williams from Christopher's Place, joined me to talk about the incredible gift Back on My Feet offers to those who are willing to participate. Donnell says that it's not about running - it's about love. Tune in for some inspiration.

It’s Your Turn: Taking Care of Your Parents
It's a common condition now and one that, sooner or later, may affect every one of you. You may feel like you're caught between a rock and a hard place. You could be raising your own children, taking care of your family, working hard at your career and job...and right now or in the future, you'll find yourself in the position of taking care of your elderly parents and their arrangements. Leonard Raskin of Wealth Advocacy Partners, joins me and talk about this very topic. However, in some cases, a medical condition or disability will make it necessary for you to hire home help or consider assisted living or nursing home facilities. And, these aren't cheap. The bottom line is...you and your parents will want to take some concrete steps to access their situation, determine their needs, and how it will be handled financially. And, the sooner, the better. Ummm, Good!
Bettina Isabella was born into a cooking family and it became her life calling. She has vivid memories of her father's and grandfather's Italian delicatessen, Palmisano’s, in Baltimore that dates back to 1947 and those memories are held dear in her heart. She insists on the freshest, local, and seasonal ingredients to create her diverse menus. Her Italian motto: bella buona cibo! (beautiful good food!) In times when, for many, "food" means a quick trip through the drive-through or a frozen dinner eaten while watching TV, it's easy to forget the joy of preparing, as well as the joy of sharing, bella buona cibo. Listen in as Bettina and I talk about choosing, preparing, sharing, enjoying and loving good food.

Your Wedding: Creating Intimate Memories You'll Hold in Your Heart
Cornelia Powell is known as the "Bride's Sage". While others tend to focus on the trappings of the wedding, she focuses on the intimacy of the bride's rite-of-passage. Inviting you to look inside to find yourself, Cornelia's book, The Bride's Ritual Guide, changes how brides prepare for their wedding and how they relate to their partners, families and friends. With her vast experience in guiding brides through their wedding planning, she discovered the answer to the question: What do brides really want? What she found out is that underneath all the ceremonial pomp and circumstance and the appeal of being a princess in the spotlight, and beyond the pressure of modern culture to get it right and the angst of making a huge life change...when a woman becomes a bride (no matter her age or how many times she's been there), she wants to stay connected to her heart and, to her partner - and feel beautiful inside and out. Tune in to hear how ritual and coming from your heart can make this special day even more special.

Becoming the Chief Executive and Decision Maker of Your Career and Advancement
While the leadership landscape may be shifting in women's favor, women are nowhere near an equal presence in leadership roles when compared to men. As a first year MBA student and aspiring executive, Selena Rezvani, was discouraged to find out about the lack of women leaders in business today. When she started to do some research, she found that women holding executive positions were few and far between. How did "the elusive few" do it and would they share their knowledge? Why Don’t I Do the Things I Know Are Good for Me?
We all know what we need to do - eat right, exercise more, get plenty of rest, save our money, and make smart decisions in our own best interest. But instead, it seems like we take good care of everyone else and neglect ourselves. With the hectic nature of daily life, from making school lunches, dealing with a crisis at work, to making sure the dog is fed and the bills are paid, it's easy to let self-care - which most consider an afterthought - slip through the cracks. Author BJ Gallagher encourages us to begin some radical self-care. Her book, Why Don't I Do the Things I Know Are Good for Me? - Taking Small Steps Towards Improving the Bigger Picture, is an approachable, logical guide to help everyone from the soccer mom to the senior corporate executive recognize what is keeping them from taking care of themselves. And, even better...she provides some doable solutions. Listen in to find out why "quick fixes" don't work and how taking small, manageable steps can lead to more self-awareness and a quality of life you will treasure.

Things have changed drastically over the past 10-15 years when it comes to choosing the "right" college, the actual application process and getting in. In fact, according to Christine M Hall, Ed.D., the Founder of CMH College Consulting, choosing the right college can be an overwhelming task for the applicant and his/her family. Not all kids go to college or want to go to college. For those who do, curriculum planning, choosing meaningful activities, and completing the application and essay are of major importance. If you have kids who have plans for higher learning, you'll definitely want to check out what Dr. Hall has to share.

Emotional Baggage: An Archaeological Dig into Your Past
Nobody enters a relationship without some baggage. And, whether you and your partner bring overnight cases or steamer trunks, pretty soon, as you start unpacking your bags, "stuff" will come up. Relationship therapists, Lori and Bob Hollander, joined me to discuss how family history affects our relationships. They maintain that unearthing, understanding, unraveling and unlocking your history is the way to unload it. There is no need for history to repeat itself. Both you and your partner can take an honest look at your "stuff" and determine you're ready to leave that old baggage behind and consciously create the relationship and the future you want.

A Temporary Madness
Most of us have heard of the "baby blues", a passing sadness that strikes 50-75% of new mothers after delivery. And, most of us understand postpartum depression, a post-delivery sadness that lingers for weeks or months in an estimated one in every 10 new mothers. But a more serious form of disorder that strikes up to one in every 500 new mothers is postpartum psychosis. Postpartum psychosis can trigger severe agitation, confusion, insomnia, hallucinations, delusions, mania and possible thoughts of suicide or murder. Every year, women around the world kill their babies, children, or themselves as a result of this mental illness. Teresa Twomey, J.D., an official with Postpartum Support International and the author of Understanding Postpartum Psychosis: A Temporary Madness, joined me to discuss this temporary madness. She provided insight into the psychological, personal, medical, legal, and historical perspectives on this little-understood mental illness - which is both preventable and treatable.

The Thrill of DIY
The ToolBox TomGirl and WomanTalk Live's DIY Home Repair Expert, Jo Ellen Soesbee of Reliable Repairs, Inc., joined me and my guest co-host, Monyka Berrocosa of MyCity4Her.com. Jo Ellen’s a wealth of information offering great tips about home repairs, along with discussing the trials, tribulations and joys of creating a business doing what you love. If Jo Ellen had her way, we'd all be carrying pink hammers and wearing those pink work boots she's famous for. And, if you ask, "Why should a woman learn some basic home repairs?" Jo Ellen, says..."Why not?"- unless you just like paying somebody else big dollars to do stuff you could do easily. Suppose it's the weekend? Suppose you can't get anyone over to do the job when you want them there? Suppose you'd rather spend your money on fun stuff instead of toilet repairs? You get the picture. Simple home repair jobs take a minimal skill set and minimal tools. You just need to learn how (that's where Jo Ellen comes in) and believe you can do it. Yeah, baby.

How to Boost Your VQ
The month of May is International Victorious Woman Month. Will you be ready to celebrate? Annmarie Kelly, author of Victorious Woman! In fact, she believes that a single Victorious Woman has the ability to affect entire families, workplaces, the whole neighborhood, and maybe, the world. Annmarie and I discussed the ways women tend to give away their power and how to start turning that around - how to choose and claim victory for ourselves. Just in time for the Victory Celebration in May, you can make the decision now to get control of your self, figure out what you really want, and start making plans to get there. There will be a lot of other victorious women cheering you on. If you missed the show, tune in and get ready. Let the celebration begin!

What Makes a Girl Gone Great?
In the summer of 2007, I decided I was sick and tired of hearing about girls going wild. You know - Britney, Lindsay and Paris. These young women were out of control. What I felt was even more frightening was that these out-of-control young women were becoming role models for other young women. Yikes! So, I decided I wanted to find out about the young women doing great things in our area, and WomanTalk Live and Talkradio 680 WCBM in Baltimore initiated the Girls Gone Great Scholarship Essay Contest. I am so happy to tell you there are lots of young women out there doing wonderful things - lots of girls being great, and I'm thrilled to introduce the third Girl Gone Great - the WomanTalk Live 2010 Girl Gone Great, Aidel Miriam Reach. In addition, Kendra Jolivet, a co-founder of the She Matters Conference for young women, ages 9-17, joined me to talk about the third annual conference coming up in May - one of my favorite events of the year.

Discovering Your True Purpose for Money
Leonard Raskin, the WTL Women’s Wealth Expert, joined us to talk about the importance of discovering your true purpose for money. Each of us has our own set of values and beliefs and one way that we express values is through financial decisions. Think of it this way: when financial decisions align with values, we experience a very real sense of satisfaction and contentment. However, when we struggle, worry, experience buyers’ remorse, or suffer over money, it’s very likely that our financial choices are inconsistent with our inner value system. This is why, no matter what financial decision you are facing, the first step is to define your values. The discovery process can work for everyone.

BFF's, Frenemies, Gal Pals and Everything in Between
Do you know who has your back, or who is rolling her eyes behind it? Female friendships are some of the most powerful and beautiful relationships in our lives. They are life-changing, dramatic, and often fleeting. Yet sometimes we still find it hard to express our true sentiments to the women closest to us. In her book, P.S.: What I Didn't Say, editor Megan McMorris gathered a collection of unsent letters from various women writers to their female friends, representing a range of unsaid emotions. P.S. includes expressions of love, feelings of anger, and friends apologizing to those they have drifted apart from. And, the feelings expressed resonate with women of all ages from different walks of life. In addition, Megan discussed the five friends every woman needs on her speed dial...and, the three you should "defriend" immediately. Tune in because you’ll relate for sure. And, you might even have some stories of your own.

The Law of Attraction – Does It Work?
Katy Manna of The Illuminated Path joined me and my guest co-host, Monyka Berrocosa, to talk about The Law of Attraction. This concept has been on the radar screen of many over the past several years. In fact, some people have become disillusioned with the concept - thinking it should behave more like a "magic wand" than something for which you take individual responsibility. Because The Law of Attraction is usually associated with attracting those things we actually want in our life, Katy has discovered that this concept can perpetuate a cycle of shame in many people. They apply the principles they've read about...and, nothing happens. In fact, everything but what they want happens. Tune in to hear our discussion with Katy about awareness, raising your vibration (YES!), creating with intention and learning how to live with YOUR lights on.

The Low-Sex or No-Sex Relationship
According to the WTL Relationship Experts, Lori and Bob Hollander of Relationships Work, one in 5 couples live in a sexless marriage or relationship; one-third of couples have mismatched desire; and, only 40% of couples say that are very satisfied with their sex lives. Well, what’s up with that? Just how important is sex in a long-term relationship and, if it’s important to the couple, can desire be rekindled? According to Lori and Bob, "Love making, one of the few pleasures in life that has no calories and is free, is a wonderful and fulfilling part of a relationship. With conscious effort, a good erotic connection can be made great. Where there is low or no sexual desire, the sparks can be reignited when you identify the root of the sexual disconnect." The Long-Term Impact of Child Abuse and Neglect
1 out of 4 girls and 1 out of 6 boys will be sexually assaulted before they reach the age of 18. And, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 80% of the perpetrators are parents. These children turn into adults who carry this pain with them. With those statistics, you or someone you know is most likely a survivor. So, what are the major issues impacting adult survivors of child abuse and neglect? My guest, Diane Champe', the Survivor's Champion and a Professional Affiliate with the Trauma Division of the American Psychological Association, grew up in a military family and was mentally, physically, emotionally and sexually abused the first 21 years of her life. There is no relationship challenge as potentially devastating as an affair. In one fell swoop, years and years of trust, commitment and love are put into question. To make it worse, couples who experience an affair can be negatively influenced by well-meaning family and friends, as well as sensationalistic media, to believe that the only smart choice is to end the relationship. In truth, an affair does not have to mean the end of a partnership. In fact, an affair can lead to a more powerful connection than either partner could have imagined. And the healing starts when partners are able to see through the un-truths associated with affairs. The Importance of PANKs
Melanie Notkin is not a mom, but she is a woman who loves children and she knew she wasn't alone. It's estimated that today, childless women represent over 50% of the adult female population, and one-quarter of the entire adult population. And, whether these women are childless by choice, they do not lead a childless lifestyle. Children are often front-and-center in their lives, as these women play devoted Auntie to relatives, friends or co-worker's children. And, these relationships are a fundamental part of their lives. Melanie has dubbed this modern segment of American women: PANKs - Professional Aunts, No Kids. Realizing the size and understanding the needs of the market of women like herself, she launched SavvyAuntie.com in July 2008, the first and only online community for Aunts and all women who love kids. Listen in to find out how SavvyAuntie.com gives Aunts a unique and modern approach to learn, connect, share and celebrate “Aunt-hood”.

The fallout from this painful legacy reverberates throughout every aspect of the daughters' lives as they struggle with chronic feelings of inadequacy and emptiness and feel the need to please others. Listen in to hear our guest, a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, who specializes in treating clients with dysfunctional family-of-origin issues.

Jan's book, Women in Shadow and Light: Journeys from Abuse to Healing, features women from all over the country, ages 19-95, from every economic situation and spanning all ethnicities. Forty women bared all to express their triumph over trauma and shared their journeys from the violence of abuse to tranformation and healing. It's important to be selfish, in spite of what you were taught to believe. And, yes, you can put yourself first and still fulfill your responsibilities at home and work. Learn how to say "no" without guilt and without neglecting others.

The Light of Truth
Helping Recovering Hearts
Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom before you finally surrender. And, that’s what happened to Vaile Leonard in 1992 after battling addictions for over 20 years to heroin and alcohol. In her efforts to get clean, Vaile became aware that something was missing in treatment and recovery. And, in 1999, Vaile founded The Light of Truth Center, a residential recovery house in Baltimore that not only helps women get clean and stay clean, but helps their souls recover, too. She tells the women who come, “Stay here as long as you need to stay here and let us love you until you can learn to love yourself.” Listen in to hear Vaile’s loving message of strength and renewal.

Conquering Fear
The Will to Live
In January 2004, Anne Hjelle and her good friend, Debi, headed off to go mountain biking in the Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park. About 30 minutes into the ride, Anne rounded a corner and was slammed to the ground and dragged into the brush by a mountain lion that had attacked and killed another biker earlier. The survival mode kicked in for both Anne and Debi as they fought the mountain lion. They were joined in battle by other bikers and finally, the lion released its grip and ran off. Anne sustained almost 40 deep bite wounds and her mangled face was pieced together using more than 200 stitches and staples. Tune in to hear Anne’s incredible story of courage and the valuable lessons she has learned through her emotional and physical recovery.
