For just about everyone, adversity will be a part of life.  At some point or at many times during our lives, we may wonder how we’ll keep going and how we will cope.  The world as we know it has turned upside down.  It could be a relationship that has fallen apart, a job loss, the death of a loved one, an illness, or a catastrophic event that’s totally out of our control.  How do we go forward?

My guests this week know something about coping with the unexpected, dealing with the barrage of feelings that can overwhelm, and choosing to embrace life.  Joining me in the studio will be Erika Brannock, the 29 year-old pre-school teacher from Towson, MD, who was seriously injured in the Boston Marathon bombings and her mother, Carol Downing, who was in Boston to run her first marathon there and who was cheered on by Erika and her other daughter, Nicole, and her son-in-law, who were also injured that day.

What started out as a beautiful, joyful day turned into everyone’s worst nightmare and touched hearts all over the world.  Be sure to join us this week when these two amazing women talk about the power of the human spirit and what keeps them going.

Mentoring young people has proven to be an effective strategy for not only boosting academic achievement, but also for providing them with social development skills and improving their overall lives, which increases their opportunities for long-term success.

Joining me this week in the Conscious Conversations Café are three women who are “being there” for young people in the community and making a big difference:

Alexia Clifton  – a health, fitness and wellness consultant with over 20 years of experience in the fitness industry.  She has owned and operated No Sweat Fitness, Inc. in Baltimore for the past 11 years.  She has been a volunteer with First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” initiative for the past 5 years and also volunteers for “Marathon Kids”, another youth based organization.  Her television series, FitWorld is aimed at children and teens and will debut on Howard County Cable TV in the near future.

Kim Fabian – a Senior Vice President for Junior Achievement of Central Maryland. Serving more than 38,000 K-12 students each year, JA empowers young people to own their future success through programs in work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy.

LaQuisha Hall – Mrs. Essence 2013, the founder of iEAT (Empower. Aspire. Transform.) and Queendom T.E.A. Mentoring, and the author of Positively Bodyful, a self-esteem journal for girls. Her mission is to empower women and girls through building their self-esteem and educating them on the issues of sexual abuse and domestic violence.

Tune in to hear, from their perspectives, why “being there” and giving back is so important for our young people and what giving back has meant for them.

“Love never dies a natural death.  It dies because we don’t know how to replenish its source.” – Anais Nin

My guests this week, Lori and Bob Hollander of Relationships Work, know a thing or two about love and relationships and the good, the bad and the ugly that can show up in them.  One thing they know for sure, after working with couples for over twenty years, is that there is a romantic crisis going on with most couples today.

They see that most people believe in the “Fantasy of Romance” – that everything will stay fabulous, hot, sexy and attentive forever.  So, when the normal life cycle of a relationship or marriage takes place and when the little ones come along… everything changes.

What to do?  Is it a hopeless cause?  Not necessarily.  But, each partner has to put some effort in the equation and spice things up again.

Tune in this week if you and your partner have fallen into the routine of ho-hum boredom and you’d like to do something about it.  In fact, the “doing something about it” might be the most fun you two have had in a while.

Why do leaders get stuck and sometimes find themselves pushing hard but not gaining traction? Frequently it’s because they’re working against themselves, defeating their best efforts with their own thoughts and emotions.

Everybody feels afraid, insecure, guilty, not good enough from time to time. That’s normal. But when problematical thoughts and feelings become patterns in your business and consistently affect your decision-making and leadership behaviors, they’re HeadTrash that requires cleanup on your part.

My guest this week, Tish Squillaro, the CEO and Managing Partner of Candor Consulting and the co-author of  HeadTrash: Cleaning out the Junk that Stands between You and Success, has spent more than 18 years assisting CEOS and senior leaders of many of America’s top corporations to develop their leadership skills. Through her extensive experience of training and coaching leaders, she and her co-author, Timothy I. Thomas, have identified the seven emotions that muddy the thinking of top executives to the point that they lose their ability to lead effectively.

Tune into our conversation to find out how to understand and control the unproductive emotions and fears that undermine effectiveness in the workplace and ultimately, your whole life – no matter where your leadership skills are being used.

Since its founding 30 years ago, Marian House has become known as the leading organization in Baltimore City offering high quality rehabilitative services and housing to homeless women and their children.

Founded in 1982 as a joint project of the Sisters of Mercy and the School Sisters of Notre Dame, Marian House offers the solution for women who have lost hope.  It’s a safe place for them to heal, recover, gain their independence, reunite with their children, and become productive members of society.

Joining me in the studio this week will be Katie Allston, the Executive Director of Marian House and Renee, a former Marian House resident who is creating an independent life.

A victim of child sexual assault and adult sexual assault, Renee has struggled with substance abuse and mental health issues and has a history of incarceration. Renee entered Marian House on June 13, 2011, transitioned into Marian House II on February 21, 2012 and exited the program on April 18, 2013.

During her time at Marian House she successfully completed the job readiness program and was captain of the Resident team for 2011 5K Race to Embrace Independence, Marian House’s only annual fundraiser. She hopes to study Mental Health and Addictions and currently works in the hospitality industry.  Renee… a powerful woman who has moved from dependence to independence.

Tune in on Saturday evening to be inspired and find out what happens when a dedicated group of people come together to create a real solution to a problem and help women transform.

Whether we’re skinny or fat, tall or short, drop-dead gorgeous or just beautifully average, we women tend to have one thing in common:

We spend a heck of a lot of time focused on our bodies – with the result being everything from mild annoyance to downright self-hatred. Yet, most of us seem to accept this hyper-focus as part of being a woman.

But does it have to be that way?

This week, a panel of fabulous women will weigh in and share their personal body stories and, most importantly, how they made the transition from loathing to love and what they learned about themselves and life along the way:

Susan Bishop, ccpc, and Founder of Unlocked Box, is a creativity and branding coach who works with individuals and organizations to explode their creative fire-power and stand in the dangerous and exciting place of beginning.

Christy Little Jones, a creator, speaker, coach and the founder of My Relationship Revolution ℠, is passionate about people. She inspires, encourages and equips women through her speaking and coaching to be authentic, embrace their power and influence and develop the integrity to live what they believe in their most important relationships.

Christine Haynes, a jewelry designer (Fezelry) turned motivational speaker/blogger/health wellness enthusiast. Her hope is to inspire others to make positive healthy lifestyle changes by sharing her personal journey into health and wellness.

Join us this week as we talk about the one issue that just about every woman can relate to.

According to the CDC, almost 26 million people of all ages in the  U.S. have diabetes.  Of those, 7 million may be undiagnosed or unaware of their condition.

Alarmingly, Type 2 Diabetes accounts for approximately 90-95% of all diagnosed cases and it is the form of diabetes which is largely preventable by making lifestyle changes.  Up to 85% of complications and morbidities among individuals with Type 2 Diabetes can be prevented, delayed, or effectively treated.

Not to be taken lightly, the problems that are associated with Type 2 Diabetes are common and can be severe:  heart disease, stroke, hypertension, blindness and eye problems, kidney disease, nervous system complications, amputations, dental disease, pregnancy complications, and mental health problems (such as depression).

Back in 2007, cases of diagnosed diabetes cost the U.S. an estimated $174 BILLION – a staggering figure when you consider that this amount will only continue to rise as more people are diagnosed.

Joining us this week on the show to talk about diabetes and how you can take control of your health, manage the disease and live your best life are:

Huong Nguyen, M.D., board certified in internal medicine, endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism, with the Diabetes and Endocrinology Center of The Maryland Metabolic Institute at Saint Agnes Hospital

Mary Blanchard, RN, MSN, CDE, of Saint Agnes Hospital, who has been a diabetes educator for more than 20 years, developing, managing and teaching in diabetes education programs.  It is her passion to help people find ways to live well with this challenging condition.

Frances (Gina) Peters, who has had diabetes for 15 years and is taking control of it with the help of the Diabetes and Endocrinology Center of The Maryland Metabolic Institute at Saint Agnes Hospital and her own determination and commitment.

Tune in this week for the important information that will be shared – it could be a life saver for you or someone you care about.

Beautiful, fit, happily married, and successful, former Citigroup executive and motivational speaker Linda Crill was – and saw herself – as the kind of woman who could make things happen. But after losing her husband at 57, the identity Linda held closely no longer seemed to fit. Like many of us, she found herself asking, “What now?”

Desperate for change – and in a fit of rebellion – Linda did something totally different from anything she had done before: she traded in her corporate suits for motorcycle leathers and committed to a 2,500-mile road trip down America’s Pacific Northwest coast with a group of experienced motorcycle riders.  At the time, Linda had never ridden anything more powerful than a bicycle and she only had 30 days to learn how to ride this new machine.

In Linda Crill’s new memoir, Blind Curves, she recounts her surprising adventure and shares the important lessons she learned along the way.

Linda says, “We tend to create a bubble around us that says, ‘this is who I am,’  but when the unexpected occurs and our bubble bursts, suddenly everything seems to fall apart.  On this trip, I realized the answers we are searching for are often found around blind curves – the unknown.”

And, joining me as my Guest Co-Host this week is the full-of-life Leslie Stein – an author, speaker, facilitator, life enthusiast and friend.  She, just like many of us, has had to ask the question, “What now?”

Tune in this week to what promises to be an enlightening, encouraging and inspirational discussion for any woman who will be looking for the answer to her own “What now?”

Whole Body what?  Whole Body Vibration.  Research has proven that just ten minutes of WBV equals one hour of conventional weight training, and the benefits don’t end there.  WBV can help you lose weight, increase bone density, increase brain strength, increase energy and vitality… AND, it has benefits for your beauty and libido as well.  Whoa.  Tell me more!

Becky Chambers, the author of Whole Body Vibration: The Future of Good Health, is a naturopath, teacher, author, and the president/owner of Vibrant Health where she specializes in the breakthrough body and mind and energy therapies of Whole Body Vibration and high-potency homeopathy.

Join us this week as Becky explains the science behind WBV and the amazing healthy difference it can make in our lives.

Saturday, August 10th, from 6:07-7:00 pm ET on Talkradio 680 WCBM Baltimore or “Listen Live” online.

You can also download the WCBM 680 app at iTunes or for Android

If you missed the show or you want to share it with a friend, it’s in the podcast archive now.  It’s the August 3rd show!
