For way too long in our culture, women in the third phase or “third fire” of their lives have been underestimated.
Filmmaker Joni Steele Kimberlin was reminded of this every time she was channel surfing trying to find something to watch on TV. She was amazed at how much we are bombarded with the so-called “reality” shows which depict silly, shallow and often vulgar images of women – not even close to the way most women live or can relate to. Reality? Hardly, thank goodness.
So, Joni set out to create a film that would showcase vital, powerful women who have lived life full out, accomplished great things, found their passion, and are using their wisdom and experience to help change the world.
“Approximately sixty million American women are over the age of fifty and in their ‘third fire’ of life now,” says Joni. What about them? What about their “realness”? What wisdom do they have to share?
Joni crisscrossed the U.S., traveled to London and India to interview the 18 women featured in her award-winning documentary, Get Real! Wise Women Speak. Women like…Della Reese, Jane Fonda, Marianne Williamson, Susan L. Taylor, Angeles Arrien, Jean Shinoda Bolen, and Indigenous elders, Agnes Baker Pilgrim and Floredemayo of the Council of 13 Indigenous Grandmothers, to name a few.
What did Joni find as a result of her journey? “Growing older can be an adventure which bestows the freedom to truly become a Wise Woman. With this documentary I celebrate this remarkable time in a woman’s life and create a counterpoint to the youth-obsessed media that bombards us day after day with superficial and unrealistic images of women.”
Join us this week and be inspired to celebrate your wisdom and experience and use it to make the world a better place.
