  • This Week on WomanTalk Live: “She’s GRRRREEAAT!” with Brooke Burghardt

    Thursday, April 4, 2013

    senior portrait
    Brooke Burghardt

“The theme of the conference was keeping girls in underdeveloped countries out of the tragic cycle of human trafficking.  I had heard of trafficking but had not thought deeply about the topic until that day…This conference opened my eyes to a whole new world and gave me a mission.” – Brooke Burghardt

Choosing the 6th Annual Girl Gone Great was not an easy task this year.  We had over 300 essays submitted from young women all over the state of Maryland.

I am so happy to tell you there are lots of young women out there doing wonderful things – lots of girls being great and lots of girls making a difference.

On this week’s show, joining me in the studio will be Susan Ottenritter of Raskin Global’s Women Getting Wise on Wealth, along with Kathy Kreft and Stacey Berman, members of The Baltimore Power Group, an organization for women working in the commercial real estate industry.  Both organizations, along with Talkradio 680 WCBM, funded the $3,000 winnings for the WomanTalk Live Girls Gone Great Scholarship Essay Contest this year.

This packed studio of fabulous women will have the pleasure of talking with our 2013 Girl Gone Great, Brooke Burghardt.

Brooke is a senior at Mercy High School in Baltimore.  Involved with the McAuley Club (a service organization at her school) for four years has provided her with the opportunity to give back to her community.  Being a representative at the Leadership Conference for all Mercy High Schools in the U.S. and Guam, provided her the opportunity to become involved and active with global concerns.  Attending a Conference on the Status of Women at the United Nations opened her eyes even more.  And, her passion for dance has afforded her leadership opportunities at school.

One of her teachers at Mercy said, “When I think of the contest’s theme ‘Girls Gone Great,’ Brooke immediately comes to mind.  She is a young women who has already done so much good in her young life that I have no doubt that she will find many opportunities in the future to do great things to build up her community and to help heal the ills of the world.”

I must say I agree with that assessment.  Brooke is an exceptional example that shows that there are stars among us who are not only bright, but will lead the way into tomorrow.

Tune in to listen to this marvelous Girl Gone Great.

WomanTalk Live, Talkradio 680 WCBM, Raskin Global’s Women Getting Wise on Wealth and The Baltimore Power Group are so proud to honor her.

We hope you’ll join us in doing the same.

Saturday, April 6th, from 6:07-7:00 pm ET on Talkradio 680 WCBM Baltimore or “Listen Live” online

Find out more about Brooke and read her winning essay.

Be sure to check out last week’s show – She’d Do It Again: Exposing Steubenville – when I talked with Alexandria Goddard of Prinniefied.com about her role in breaking open the Steubenville rape case, a story that has generated a national discussion about our teens, social media, the Friday Night Lights culture, rape, victim-blaming and more.

If you missed the show or you want to share it with a friend, it’s in the podcast archive now.  It’s the March 30th show!
