“No act of kindness no matter how small is ever wasted.” – Aseop
The above quote came from the Aseop fable, The Lion and the Mouse, believed to be written between 620 and 560 B.C. Even way back then, the importance of “kindness” was being talked about.
Being out and about during this ho ho ho holiday season has allowed me to see and hear about the good, the bad and the ugly that can happen during the rush and the panic of this time. Actually, the good, the bad and the ugly happens at any time of the year.
About a month ago, I told you about the #Kindness Exchange idea created by the uber-fabulous Josh Urban urging all us to just get out there and be kind – and, not only be kind but to talk about it – to share the kindness out loud and let others know what you’re doing.
Well, needless to say, this stirred up a bunch of stuff for people who don’t feel comfortable doing this or for those who feel you shouldn’t “brag” about what you do for others. During lots of conversation in The Kindness Exchange Facebook Group, many stepped forward to voice those very feelings. And, other voices were heard, too – the voices of people who didn’t feel it was bragging (it seems, it’s all in the way it’s shared). And, if there’s one thing I’ve learned in life, it’s that no matter what you do, there will be somebody out there who doesn’t like it, agree with it or is offended by it. Right? So, go ahead and share the good stuff.
So, here are some more of the kindnesses that have been shared over the past month. You tell me if they feel like “bragging” or if they feel like those “making a difference” stories that warm your heart:
I was getting my usual local coffee at 4 in the morning, my usual time, when I saw a gentleman standing nearby obviously cold, possibly a little hung over. “How you doing?” I asked. “I’m cold!” he said. I gave him my hoodie. “See if this fits.” It did. He looked surprised, then grateful, and maybe even a little warmer.
I have so many wonderful memories cutting down a Christmas tree with my family, and now I continue to enjoy this special tradition with the hubs and in-laws! Today was no exception, but leaving with our tree I decided to make a new memory with strangers….I gifted a tree to another family who was out on the farm cutting their spruce. I hope it makes their day, and that their two boys will enjoy these special moments for years to come!
Last night, my husband and I made 70 bag lunches for a local community center. I wrote little “I love you” cards and placed one in each bag. I don’t think those three words are said (and meant) enough, and everyone wants to know that someone loves them. I do love them, even though they are strangers to me.
Something I have been doing for years…giving the person behind me in line the gift card I didn’t completely use. They are always shocked and usually the cashier is too. It makes my heart smile.
Had to go to Wal-Mart again (sigh) – saw same singing bell ringer – brought him coffee again – overjoyed was his reaction!! Also took a cart from someone just finished filling their car from it and offered to put it away in ‘cart corral’ – you’d a thought I gave him money he was so thankful. . .it’s the little things, isn’t it, the little kindnesses. . .
In addition to all of the kindnesses people are sharing, something magical is happening to the people within The Kindness Exchange Group:
This group has become an oasis for me in the midst of the negativity of the internet and the real world. I receive an instant mood and hope-humanity-boost every time I visit here. You are good people.
Finding myself feeling extra caressed by kindness; mine, yours and ours. This isn’t just a one-time Holiday special. This I know!
The universe is amazing. By being part of this group I am more conscious of being kind but I am also more aware of the kindness of those around me.
Are things actually getting kinder today? Or is it just me? Either way, it’s not exactly like I’m running with scissors…
What’s happening with me as a result of hanging out with you: being super conscious of “seeing, hearing, listening, acknowledging” the people I come into contact with every day and doing a pay-it-forward ( a cup of coffee/toll booth fare/parking receipt) when I can. I am involved in so many charitable events/causes as a result of my work and the causes that I support…. where I really want to focus is on these everyday acts that, perhaps, lift someone else up and make me a more loving person… THANK YOU for your inspiration.
Sometimes an unintended benefit of being kind is that you get more or just as much from the act of being kind as the person you’re being kind to.
Nice, huh? It’s a wonderful thing to be caressed with kindness, to be inspired by others doing small and sometimes big, loving, thoughtful acts.
All I know is that I’m planning on this not being just a holiday event. I’m revving up my Super Power. Want to join me?
Kindness is contagious. Let’s spread some and hope the epidemic grows by leaps and bounds in 2014.
Happy Holidays to each of you! May the love of this season be with you right now and in the coming year.
