On My Mind: Ask for What You Want
Thursday, January 23, 2014“Cats seem to go on the principle that it never hurts to ask for what you want.”
- Joseph Wood KrutchFrom this point on, I’m taking lessons from Minkey and Weasel.
The past five months have felt like a whirlwind. I’m not one of those people who react badly to change. In fact, I welcome the fresh air that change can bring. However, the decision we made to pull up roots and relocate while being exciting and adventurous, also felt more than overwhelming and exhausting.
After making the decision to do it, then the work began. Emotionally and physically tiring, we got the house ready to be put on the market. And, on my birthday, September 11th, the first open house just for brokers was held and the following Sunday, there was an open house for the public.
Up until the holidays, there was a somewhat steady stream of traffic. But, they needed one more room, they wanted the master bedroom on the first floor, they needed more storage space, they have two huge dogs, they wanted a different kitchen and so on and so on.
Since mid-September, we’ve been on alert for the phone call that said, “Someone wants to see your house.” We would then go into our house-showing routine which we had down to about 45 minutes IF we kept the house pretty straight most of the time. We’d chase Weasel down and get her in the carrier and off we’d go to have lunch, do errands or even just sit in the car at the end of the street until they left.
Whenever someone would stay for 45 minutes or longer, we’d get excited. When they left after 10 minutes, we took that as a “no.” But, we just needed one person. Right?
After the first of the year, we held another Open House. And, the following weekend, there was a flurry of showings. Good sign? We thought so. So, on this past Monday, while Bob and I were having lunch while the house was being shown, I said, “We’re going to get more than one offer. I feel it in my bones and the price will be right and all of the other things we want will be right.”
By Tuesday morning, we had three offers. One, meh…. the other two – as good as it gets. In fact, everything we said we wanted and more. As my TUT (Totally Unique Thoughts) message – A Note from The Universe said earlier this month…. “DREAM BIGGER…. Let’s do this…..Coolio?”
That evening and most of yesterday, Bob and I were exhausted. I imagine we had been running on adrenalin for months and had this giant release happening. Someone asked me if we celebrated and I said “Yes… we took a 3-hour nap.” We knew we had been pushing ourselves. We just didn’t realize how much.
Lessons reinforced over the past five months?
- It’s important to pace myself
- Know that not everything is a priority – learn how to say “NO”
- Take care of myself – exercise, sleep, eat well, have quiet time
- Have some fun time
And, the biggest lessons learned???
- Ask for what I want – the cats know it never hurts to use your voice and make your intentions known
- Dream big – what’s the best treat possible?
- Keep a grateful heart – whatever makes me purr can open my grateful heart
- Take a nap when needed – sometimes, that alone, can fix what’s ailing you
As we enter the next phase of this new journey, may I keep all of these lessons in mind until they are automatic for me.
And, you? Are you asking for what you want and letting your voice be heard?
If you need lessons, I’ll send Minkey and Weasel over.
