The time of year from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Eve is a time of mixed feelings for so many of us. Happiness, joy, excitement, reflection, longing, and sadness are just a few of the emotions that make themselves known during this time. And, it’s okay to feel any of them or all of them as your feelings dictate.
I know that I experience each of them… missing loved ones and friends who are no longer with us, missing traditions from the past, missing not physically being with those I love so much on these special days – and the other extreme that is full of love and gratitude for all that I have and for often feeling in a perpetual state of saying “Thank you” to others, to paths through the woods, to snuggly cats, to a warm throw across my lap, to a great glass of wine, and so many other gifts.
So feel what comes up and be gentle with yourself. Practice compassion. Perhaps when you are on the upswing, you may provide much needed comfort to another just with a hug or a hand squeeze.
Wishing you the warmest, most loving holidays – and, not wanting to offend anyone who does not observe Christmas (we celebrate it all in our home!), please accept the following sentiment and substitute whatever you like in “What is ____?”:
What is Christmas? It is tenderness for the past, courage for the present, hope for the future. It is a fervent wish that every cup may overflow with blessings rich and eternal, and that every path may lead to peace.
