    • More Than Money: Are You Staying in Action Toward Your Money Goals?

      Thursday, December 19, 2013

      Leonard Raskin RG
      Leonard Raskin

Over the past few weeks, we asked you to:

      1. Think about your financial goals for 2014.
      2. Prioritize your goals for 2014.
      3. Write down the daily, weekly and monthly actions you’ll need to adopt to reach those goals.
      4. Make a list of any obstacles that might stop you from taking action toward your goals.
      5. And, finally, figure out what you need to do overcome each obstacle – whether it’s a belief shift exercise or brainstorming a way to get around a logistical roadblock.

Now, that you have all of the above, you’re well on your way to making 2014 your best money year ever in terms of making progress toward achieving your goals.

Even so, life has a way of thwarting plans fast, and if we’re not rock solid in our resolve, and if we don’t have structures in place to support our effort, we can easily get off track.

So, what can we do to make sure we don’t find ourselves further away from our financial goals, rather than closer to them?

Here are a few tips to help you stay in action and on track in making your 2014 money actions a reality:

      • Visualize the tangible results of achieving your goals and what life will be like when you get there. Think about making a vision board to remind you of what you’re going for and revisit it when you need inspiration or feel your motivation slipping.
      • Keep your daily, weekly and monthly actions list someplace where you’ll see it every day. If possible, keep it near the spot where you’ll actually be taking action (e.g. on the wall next to the desk where you balance your checkbook or conduct online banking).
      • Create a tickler system that reminds you of your critical actions (e.g. set calendar reminders on your smart phone).
      • Enlist an accountability buddy to help you both stay motivated (i.e. this would be someone who has also outlined her money goals for 2014 and has an action list prepared).
      • Set a meeting with your financial professional for the beginning of the year to review your goals, and set an accountability date with him or her at the half way point (May, June or July) to report on progress and make course corrections.
      • Plan small rewards for meeting benchmark interim goals, and also a big celebration for when you reach your annual goal at the end of 2014.

These are just a few tips for staying on track toward your financial goals. Now, it’s your turn to brainstorm a handful more that you think will work particularly well for you.

Once your customized-for-you financial stay-on-track tip list is complete, you have just one more task before the real fun begins:

Get everything you’ll need to take your financial actions and stay in motion ready for the first of year – that way, you can hit the ground running come January 1st.

    • More Than Money: What’s Your Action Plan for 2014?

      Thursday, December 12, 2013

      Leonard Raskin RG
      Leonard Raskin

Last week, we shared a list of questions to help you determine your money goals for 2014. This week, we want you to take it one step further by prioritizing your top three goals and creating an action plan for each.

Specifically, we want you to write down what you’ll do every day, every week and/or every month to accomplish each goal on your list. This will become your short-term action list. Next, write down any long-term measures or benchmarks you need to hit to reach your goals, and what actions you must take to reach those beyond your daily, weekly and monthly tasks.

After you have your action list, give yourself a big pat on the back, because many people never get even this far.

But we don’t want you to step there. We want you take one more big step.

It’s big because it’s the step that can make the most difference in actually accomplishing your goals – and it’s a step that, if skipped, can keep you from your goals without you ever realizing what hit you.

It’s making a list of everything (emotional, practical, mental, etc.) that could possibly stop you from taking the actions you’ve listed.

So, for every action step on your list, ask yourself this question:

What will stop me from taking this action?

What fears does this action bring up? What logistical factors might prevent me from taking this action? What beliefs I am holding that will make it difficult for me to stay motivated?

Once you have your obstacles list, your next step is to deal with those roadblocks – even before you begin to take real action. If it’s a fear in your way, find out what beliefs are driving that fear and what new beliefs would help you overcome it. If it’s a logistical problem, brainstorm a way around it. For every obstacle, come up with a game plan for addressing it. And, if you can’t find a way around your obstacle, ask for help. After all, it can be difficult to un-do a long-held fear or belief (or even to brainstorm other possibilities for getting around practical concern) without an objective perspective.

But whether you go it alone or seek outside support in overcoming possible barriers to your action plan’s success, just taking the time to look at what might get in your way, can take you further than you might imagine.

Next time: Tips for sticking with your 2014 action plan once you’ve addressed potential obstacles to success.

    • More Than Money: What’s Your Money Goal for 2014?

      Thursday, December 5, 2013

      Leonard Raskin RG
      Leonard Raskin

With Thanksgiving behind us, we only have one month left (actually, a mere 27 days) to wrap up our 2013 financial lives and get ready to set new financial goals for 2014.

      Why is this important?

Like every goal in life, without a plan for getting there, you are dramatically decreasing your chances of doing so. Taking even just the first step of deciding on your money goals goes further than you might think toward helping you get there. It doesn’t just happen, of course, but by setting goals we do set something powerful in motion simply because we’re putting our attention on what we want.

So, what goals do you want to set for yourself in 2014? Where would you like to be with your finances by this time next year? Where would you like to be with your finances 20 years from now?

Here are some questions that might help you determine the money goals you’d be wise to focus on:

      • Do you have an emergency fund?
      • Do you save every month?
      • Do you invest?
      • Do you have a budget?
      • Do you live within your budget?
      • Are you protected? In other words, do you have the protection vehicles you need should something tragic (or even just a minor accident) occur?
      • Do you have a financial professional in your corner?
      • Do you know your tolerance for risk?
      • Do you know how your investments work?
      • Do you know how 2014 changes in the law affect your finances?
      • What do you want your far-off financial future to look like?
      • What changes are occurring in your family? (kids going to college, kids graduating from college, divorce, new business ventures, job changes)
      • What is your big dream for 2014?

Each one of the above questions and more might lead to a specific financial goal for 2014. Our wish for you is that you set more than one goal. In fact, we’d like you to have both short- and long-term goals when it comes to your money – as well as at least one goal related to your retirement.

While it’s usually easier to think about the near future, the distant future will be here before you know it and it’s only the goals you set now that will allow you to be prepared.

After all, who wants to just scrap by when you can actually take control and make your dreams happen?

      To getting wiser,

    • More Than Money: Are You Ready to
      E-M-P-O-W-E-R Yourself?

      Thursday, November 21, 2013

Last month, ABC News shared a story around a topic we’ve been talking about for a long time. In fact, we talk about it almost every week.

It’s the idea that women feel less confident with regard to their finances than men do and, as ABC News puts it, they are, therefore, “not fulfilling their financial potential.”

      So, what’s the solution?

ABC suggests it’s all about feeling empowered – taking charge and refusing to let fear get in the way of your financial future.

Sound familiar? And, of course, we couldn’t agree more.

      According to the article:

If you’re a woman, you must make up your mind that you can do this, that you will do it and that you’re not going to let antiquated, ill-conceived notions of gender drag you down. Keep “EMPOWER” in your mind as an acronym representing [financial] concepts…

What is the acronym for EMPOWER? What are the concepts that will help you take charge? All you have to do is click here to find out.

Then, next week, we’ll help you take an even bigger step forward.

    • More Than Money: Someone Better Be Telling Us This!

      Thursday, November 14, 2013

      Leonard Raskin RG
      Leonard Raskin

Many women tend to be a bit less skilled at tooting their horns than their male counterparts are – and while it’s easy to pat ourselves on the back for our humble demeanor, what we actually need to be doing is kicking ourselves in the you-know-what.

Especially, in our working lives where we literally can’t afford to sit back and let others hog the spotlight. At least not if we want the money and the position we deserve.

Sure, we’re “humble,” and that’s great. But we’re also underpaid, overworked and less than satisfied, and that’s not so great.

      Enter Kate White.

Kate is a New York Times best-selling author, editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan magazine and she has something to share with us all about stepping up and getting what we deserve. Her newest book, I Shouldn’t Be Telling You This: How to Ask for the Money, Snag the Promotion, and Create the Career You Deserve was published just last month and we thought you would enjoy hearing about it.

Here are just a few reviews from Amazon:

“This is NOT your mother’s plodding, nose-to-the-grindstone, put-on-a-power-suit career guide. Kate White gives us her witty and wise secret sauce to fast-tracking your career, thinking big, having fun, getting the money you deserve–all while pursuing your passion.” (Claire Shipman, ABC News Correspondent and co-author of Womenomics)

“Kate’s fierce courage and determination make this book a witty, fun, and refreshingly blunt read for career women-teachers and CEOs alike!” (Mika Brzezinski, MSNBC’s Morning Joe co-host and author of Knowing Your Value)

“I Shouldn’t Be Telling You This packs a powerful punch: Ms. White covers every possible topic the up-and-coming female executive will need to tuck into her Prada portfolio. This book should be on every career-minded woman’s bookshelf dog-eared and well read.” (New York Journal of Books)

“I Shouldn’t Be Telling You This is packed with practical lessons she’s learned over a long tenure as a leader.” (Fast Company)

If you purchase the book, we’d love to hear your thoughts. Just visit our Facebook page and tell us what you’re glad Kate told you.
