In conducting research for the book The Orange Line: A Woman’s Guide to Integrating Career, Family and Life, the co-authors discovered something interesting:

Women don’t think tangible, material rewards are important.

That sounds rather evolved, right? After all, we’re supposed to set our sights on the more meaningful things in life, not the money or the “stuff.”

The problem is that it’s this very belief system that stops women from asking for what they deserve in terms of pay. It stops them from negotiating salary. It causes them to take on lower level jobs. It inspires them to go for careers that allow them to give back, but don’t allow them to receive much in return.

According to the book’s authors, these beliefs are exactly what keep women out of the power structure and it needs to stop.
