Women in History: Did You Know?

MWHC Logo Red

Actress Rita Moreno is one of a small number of people who’ve won the “show-business grand slam” – having won an Oscar, Tony, Grammy and Emmys.

On a 2013 trip back to Puerto Rico, the 81 year-old Moreno took a challenging ride on a zip line in a tree canopy. She found it both terrifying and familiar saying: “My life and my career for the most part have been lived and built that way. The main ingredients have been desire, determination and the will to hang on!”

What an amazing woman and an inspiration for all of us!

Have you heard of Anna Ella Carroll? Probably not! Anna was a key military advisor to Abraham Lincoln and helped to end the Civil War.  October 24th through October 26th, Baltimore will have three days of terrific events to “Re-Discover Anna Ella Carroll.” Hosted by the Maryland Women’s Heritage Center, the Maryland Historical Society and the Friends of Anna Ella Carroll, the events should be exciting for history buffs, Civil War aficionados, and those interested in women’s issues.

Try to get to one or more of these unique events, including the Baltimore Premiere of a film about Anna, called “Lost River.”

The program on Friday, October 25th will be moderated by Ann Quasman – a panel of experts discussing a place for women in military history.

For more information and reservations, check the website of the Maryland Women’s Heritage Center: www.mdwomensheritagecenter.org.
