As a result of being sexually abused as a child, my guest is now a powerful advocate for children. He founded No More Stolen Childhoods, a non-profit with the mission of raising awareness of childhood sexual abuse, educating and protecting children from sexual abuse, and helping victims heal and find fulfillment in their lives. With all that we’ve recently been exposed to in the news in the high profile cases, Wayne stressed that it’s important for us to remember that the crime of child sexual abuse is happening everywhere in our own communities. With 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 7 boys being sexually abused by the age of 18 (according to 2009 FBI statistics) – that, alone should be a wakeup call for us. Even more importantly, the typical pedophile is not the boogey man offering candy from a car – it’s the person you may never suspect. Ninety percent of sexually abused victims are abused by a member of their own family or by someone known to the family. Tune in for some more sobering facts and find out what you can do to become more aware, educated and ready to act. You’ll also find out about an excellent New Yorker article written by Malcolm Gladwell which talks about “grooming.” Wayne made a generous offer to WomanTalk Live listeners and readers – for a free copy of the Safe Kids coloring book which reinforces important lessons and provides parents and caregivers with tips and tools to support the message of safety, contact Susan at 1-877-666-6735 or email at [email protected] .
