This Week on WomanTalk Live: “Women Leading the Way and Making a Difference for Our Girls”
Thursday, March 21, 2013“When we support the growth and empowerment of women and girls, we raise the quality of life for everyone. This is because when women lead they not only lead businesses, they lead in their community, they fight for their children, and they give voice to issues that are important to our collective future…” - Tabby Biddle, Huffington Post
One of my favorite organizations, Girl Scouts, recognizes the importance of leading the way for girls and young women. And, in addition to providing leadership and mentoring for education and future careers, Girl Scouts knows that a woman’s life has many aspects.
Each year for the past thirty-three years, five local “distinguished women” who have made exemplary contributions in the workplace and their community, are recognized at the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland Distinguished Women’s Award Reception. The program acknowledges the accomplishments of successful women professionals while encouraging and inspiring the next generation of women leaders. Continuing its mission of developing girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place and as an introduction to mentoring, high school aged Girl Scouts are paired with these distinguished women for one day. This provides the girls with a unique opportunity to experience first-hand what a typical workday looks like for her mentor.
Joining me this week in the studio to talk about the experience of being one of this year’s Distinguished Women’s Award honorees and what she learned from her Shadow Scout, will be Dr. Winifred J. Booker. Dr. Booker is a practicing pediatric dentist based in Owings Mills, MD and is the founder of Brushtime Products, Inc., a company that manufactures child-friendly dental hygiene products.
Dr. Booker is also the CEO and Director of Development for the nonprofit, Children’s Oral Health Institute, which she created in 1996 to focus on children’s oral health. COHI offers programs to empower children and their families with good dental health and hygiene practices.
As someone who grew up so very afraid of going to the dentist, I know that times have changed. So, I am looking forward to talking to Dr. Booker about her passion for her work and to celebrate her as one of this year’s Distinguished Women.
