  • This Week on WomanTalk Live: “Are Women FUNNY?… You Bet!” – a Conscious Conversations Café Show with Meshelle – The Indie-Mom of Comedy, Michele “Wojo” Wojciechowski and Ray Diva

    Thursday, August 1, 2013

“Why are women, who have the whole male world at their mercy, not funny? Please do not pretend not to know what I am talking about…

Precisely because humor is a sign of intelligence (and many women believe, or were taught by their mothers, that they become threatening to men if they appear too bright), it could be that in some way men do not want women to be funny. They want them as an audience, not as rivals.”
     - Christopher Hitchens, “Why Women Aren’t Funny”, Vanity Fair, January 2007

“..they make you hire a certain number of chicks, and they’re always the least funny on the writing staff. The reason why you know more funny dudes than funny chicks is that dudes are funnier than chicks.”
    - Adam Carolla, “The man’s man”, New York Post, June 16, 2012

Maybe these guys who seem to belong in a different time and place have missed a few women who immediately popped into my mind: Lucille Ball, Betty White , Gracie Allen, Phyllis Diller, Gilda Radnor, Lily Tomlin, Whoopie Goldberg, Ellen DeGeneres, Paula Poundstone, Wanda Sykes, Kathy Griffin, Melissa Mccarthy, Kristin Wiig, Tina Fey, Margaret Cho, Amy Poehler, Jenny Johnson…. and, who did I leave out???

Oh!… my fabulous guests this week in the Conscious Conversations Café:

Meshelle, “The Indie-Mom of Comedy,” a stand-up comedienne and the award-winning playwright and performer of her solo show “Diary of a MILF (Mom I’d Like to Follow). She also works as an advocate for girls and women.

Michele “Wojo” Wojciechowski , an award-winning humorist, author, and writer as well as a speaker, stand-up comedienne, and improv performer. Her humor book, Next Time I Move, They’ll Carry Me Out in a Box, on a 2013 Outstanding Book Award from the American Society of Journalists and Authors, and she loves making people laugh through her writing and performances.

Ray Diva, a stand-up comedienne who began her career at the famous Gotham Comedy Club in New York City and has been moving up every since. She is on a weekly internet talk show called “On the Flip Side”; she hosts her own Comedy Show in Baltimore, and she is also one of the host of Laffs On The Harbor which is one of the biggest Comedy Shows in the DC area which is Produced By Bob Sumner (Producer Of Def Comedy Jam & Bad Boys Of Comedy).

Join us this week as these funny women talk about their world of humor, where they get their inspiration, and why you should be having some laughter in your day… every day.

Saturday, August 3rd, from 6:07-7:00 pm ET on Talkradio 680 WCBM Baltimore or “Listen Live” online.

You can also download the WCBM 680 app at iTunes or for Android

Be sure to check out last week’s show – Our Mothers, Ourselves: The Mother/Daughter Relationship – when I talked with Ann Keeler Evans, Annmarie Kelly,  and Cherry-Lee Ward about the complexity of the mother/daughter relationship from their own perspective, and in one case, from the point of view of being a mother to two teenage daughters.

If you missed the show or you want to share it with a friend, it’s in the podcast archive now.  It’s the July 27th show!
